2008 Great Lakes Software Excellence Conference

Procrastinate no more! The already-affordable Great Lakes Software Excellence Conference can save you even more money if you register for GLSEC on or before September 22, 2007. That’s the cut-off date for early bird pricing.

The 2007 Grand Rapids software conference features a day of tutorials followed by a second day conference. The tutorial day is organized into three tracks, with highly respected speakers for each track:

Software Project Management Track: The a.m. session covers “Agile Estimation and Planning,” followed up nicely in the afternoon with “Effective User Stories for Agile Requirements.” Ken Rubin from Innolution heads up both of these stimulating tutorials, addressing and providing solutions to some of the most challenging issues in agile development.

Software Development Track: Chad Fowler is conducting a full day tutorial entitled “Your First Day on Rails.” This interactive tutorial leads the participant thought the fundamentals of both Ruby and Rails in a single day, as each attendee builds a Rails application from start to finish.

Software Testing Track: Dot Graham, visiting GLSEC from Grove Consultants in the UK, heads up the a.m. software testing track tutorial with a “Bird’s-eye View of Testing Techniques and Management.” This high-level view compares some differences between testing for agile versus traditional development, and offers numerous techniques to improve both. Michael Bolton ends the day with an interactive overview on “A (Rapid) Introduction to Rapid Software Testing.” If finding important bugs quickly, emphasizing thinking, and eliminating unnecessary work sounds like the best testing path for you, don’t miss this session!

The second day of GLSEC is the larger of the two-day Conference. The schedule features opening keynote Robert Martin, founder and president of Object Mentor. “Uncle Bob” is well known in the agile community, is author and editor of numerous books, is published in dozens of articles and trade journals, and is a regular speaker at international conferences.

After the opening keynote, conference attendees may choose sessions organized into four different tracks: General Software Development, Embedded Software Development, Quality Assurance and Testing, and Management and Process. With topics ranging from “An Automated Mock Object Generator for C++” to “Safety-Critical Software Standards and Practices for Aerospace and Medical Domains,” “Software Test Certification Roundup,” and “Convincing the Executive: Economic Arguments for Agile Software Development,” it will be difficult for attendees to decide which session to attend.

Closing keynote Patrick Foley, from Microsoft winds up the 2-day conference with a focus on the graphic designer and how he envisions their expanded role into the ever-changing landscape of software development.
